In earlier times, parents used to give essential household items on their daughters’ weddings. Many families also used to give some gold and silver. This was done with the aim of securing his future. All this was done according to their own level. But gradually it became a custom. Now the bride’s family has to pay whatever the groom’s family asks for, even if they have to take a loan from someone or mortgage their house for it. They have to arrange for him in any case. They are forced to resort to borrowed money or loans for this.

Dowry system is one of the most cruel social systems in Indian society. It has given birth to social sin with many issues like female feticide, abandonment of girl child, financial problems in girl’s family, using unfair means to earn money, emotional and physical abuse of daughter in law etc. To curb this problem, the government has made laws making dowry a punishable act.

This act has been made to see the growing problem of dowry and to prevent against dowry. Through this act a legal system was put in place to monitor the giving and taking of dowry. According to this act, fine can be imposed in case of dowry transaction. Punishment includes imprisonment of at least 5 years and a minimum fine of up to Rs 20,000 or more depending on the amount of dowry. Dowry demand is punishable. Any direct or indirect demand of dowry is also punishable with imprisonment of up to 6 months and a fine of up to Rs 15,000.

Domestic Violence Act, 2005 –

In view of the increasing domestic violence in the country and to focus on women’s safety, this act has been enacted. There are many families in the country where women are victims of domestic violence. Women are abused emotionally and physically to meet the dowry demands of their in-laws. This law has been enacted to empower women against such abuse. It protects women from domestic violence and teaches to fight against domestic violence. All forms of abuse including physical, emotional, verbal, economic and sexual are punishable under this law.

Prevention of dowry system –

Women Empowerment –

Instead of looking for a well-established groom for their daughters and investing all their savings in the daughter’s marriage, people should spend the money on their daughter’s education and make her depend on herself. If a woman works before marriage and has a desire to work further then she should continue to work after her marriage and focus her energy on her work rather than succumbing to the sarcastic comments of her in-laws. Women should be made aware of their rights, and how they can use them to protect themselves from abuse.

The gender inequality that is basically present in our society is one of the main reasons for the dowry system. Children should be taught about gender equality from an early age. Children should be taught from a very early age that both, men and women, have equal rights and none are better or less than the other. The youth should take the responsibility of ending the dowry system. They should tell their parents not to accept dowry.
